I’m a CODA, what do I need to become an interpreter?

Interpreting courses

  • I’m a CODA, what do I need to become an interpreter?

We recognise the value of growing up in a deaf, signing household. However, simply being a CODA is not a qualification and you still need to complete the formal qualifications in order to become a qualified interpreter. This includes meeting all of the qualification and academic requirements.

    You have two options:

    1. Complete the Level 6 BSL qualification and then the 2 year interpreting diploma. You do not necessarily need to start at Level 1 – we will assess your current BSL proficiency and place you in the appropriate course. Usually, CODAs are able to start at Level 3, sometimes Level 6.

Join the Interpreter Development Programme for Heritage Signers. This is a 3-year programme that takes you from scratch to a qualified interpreter. You just need to have basic proficiency in BSL at minimum Level 2 (which we will assess during the interview). However, please note that the IDPHS course is extremely challenging and is effectively like doing a full university degree.
